Friedrich Schmid church records, 1833-1875

Friedrich Schmid was a pioneering clergyman, regarded as the first Lutheran pastor in Michigan. He organized the first Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in the state, helped organize some 20 churches in southeastern Michigan, and founded and served as the first president of the Michigan Synod. Collection includes digital images of records of baptisms, marriages, and deaths, 1833-1875.

The early history of the Zion Lutheran Church of Ann Arbor parallels the career of Reverend Frederick Schmid. Reverend Schmid came to Ann Arbor from Germany and established the Zion Church in Scio Township in 1833 and the Bethlehem Church in Ann Arbor in 1849. He served as pastor of the Bethlehem Church until his retirement in 1871 and was succeeded by Reverend Herman Reuter.
